Developers of Rogue Command are bringing back the classic real-time strategy action. This one comes with some deckbuilding and roguelike features. It's arriving on PC through Steam Early Access sometime in Q3 of 2022. The release of Version 1.0 meanwhile is scheduled in 2023 along with versions for console and Mac.
In a statement, the team at Feneq revealed that they missed the fun of playing skirmish matches in RTS games they played in their childhood. The team believes that by "combining the RTS, deck builder, and roguelike genres," they can offer old-school RTS fun for the modern-day.
Like any classic RTS game, Rogue Command has players control an Engineer to construct their base. After that, they can start building their army and go for victory. To have a unique gameplay experience, the game switches things up and offers new ways to play. After every level, players choose between three blueprint cards that add a new building like factories, turrets, support buildings, or superweapons. It's important to choose wisely to have strong synergies and combos.
The game also offers players worlds of possibilities. In particular, players need to learn how to make the most of the environments to their advantage. For example, they can lure enemies into the fog to slow them and then blow them up.
Key features of the game are:
- Blending classic RTS gameplay with modern roguelike deck builders.
- Discover more than a hundred blueprint cards, each a unique building.
- Mod them with card upgrades adding new abilities to units and buildings.
- Create crazy synergies that change every run.
- Explore more than 20 procedurally-generated map types with distinct events and hazards.
- Hack the system with powerful modifications to each attempt.
- Overcome 25 different enemy types.
- Slow down the battle at any time to get an overview of the situation.
- Vibe to an original sound.
