A useful comment on Jordan Hoffman’s Rogue One review for The Guardian provides some context on one of the stranger reveals to come out of early reviews for the first Star Wars Story. After the Saturday premiere, io9 entertainment reporter Germain Lussier said “without exaggeration, 50% or more” of Rogue One trailer footage doesn’t actually appear in the movie. After seeing Rogue One, commenter FoolishEarthling provided a number of examples of shots he or she claimed were not in the film, including:
Several of these photos are among the more iconic pieces of marketing material to have emerged from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That white cape dragging through the shallow water is such a memorable image. Same for that shot of Jyn Erso disguised as an Imperial pilot.
Of course, it's always possible the commenter simply missed one of these shots during a bathroom break. It's also possible variations on these moments do appear. But combined with Lussier's 50% and it seems probable that all of these moments were lost to Rogue One in the editing room.
While it will be a bummer not to see some of these moments in the context of Rogue One’s runtime, there’s definitely an upside: the barrage of trailers, clips and TV spots haven’t shown us too much of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Rogue One is out in theaters Thursday.
