Roller Champions announced its upcoming Closed Beta testing for PlayStation 4 from February 17 to March 1. The catch, however, is that it’s limited to selected European countries. This free-to-play game has players take part in 3v3 matches where they skate and glide while also passing, dodging, and tackling members of the opposing team to score goals.
If you’re wondering what the gameplay is all about, then think Rollerball, the 2002 film. If that reference is “too old” for you, then how about the Motorball in Alita: Battle Angel. The rules are pretty simple: players need to get the ball, make laps, and score goals. Usually, the more laps are done, the higher the score. For example, doing one lap scores one point, getting two laps leads to three points, and managing three laps gives out five points, which can pretty much win the match.
To start the game, players must create their own champion and choose from three different game modes. In Quick Match, players can immediately enter the arena and go at it with opponents of the same skill. Ranked Mode, meanwhile, allows players to go up leaderboards. Finally, Custom Match is where players can choose the arena they want and play with friends.
Community Developer Véronique Bouffard said that more special and time-limited modes will be released in the future. Right now, the only other option aside from those three modes is Skatepark, where players can practice or complete some mini-games. They can even just hang out with friends there.
