It’s been two years since Ubisoft’s last entry to the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, hit the shelves, and now a ton of the franchise’s fans are hot with anticipation over what the next title will be. There is a ton of speculation as to what the next game will look like, in addition to its setting, but most seem to agree that we’ll see this next Assassin’s Creed dropping later this year. As such, rumors and supposed leaks are running more rampant now more than ever, and this latest one could make for some nice thinking exercises for fans of the series.
In a post on Reddit, a user signing himself as Baphomet has stated that the next Assassin’s Creed title will be very similar in terms of narrative to Assassin’s Creed Rogue. This means that instead of playing from the point of view of a member of the Assassin Brotherhood, it will be from the view of their sworn enemies – the Templar Order. Assassin’s Creed Rogue featured an Assassin who turns into a Templar, which provided a rather unique insight into what motivates and drives these perceived villains of the series.
As for the veracity of the so-called leak, a lot of people have been quick to note a few things that point to it as being false. The first is the title of this next Assassin’s Creed, which is stated by Baphomet to be Assassin’s Creed: Origins II, a throwback to Assassin’s Creed: Origins which told the beginnings of the Assassin Brotherhood. Ubisoft has pointed out that they have stopped with the numbered naming scheme of the series since Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, meaning that the title stated can’t possibly be true.
That said, it’s still interesting to note that one of the most ascertained things about this next game is its setting. Ever since last year, there’s been a ton of speculation that the next Assassin’s Creed will feature Vikings. This neatly ties into Assassin’s Creed Rogue, where it’s heavily hinted that Vikings were once Proto-Templars, with the protagonist Shay acquiring a set of their armor as well as Viking weapons.
Whatever the case may be, it’s important to take everything with a huge grain of salt as we wait for more concrete news at what is probably one of the most anticipated games of the year.
The series’ latest entry, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, is now available to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
