The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow when it launches Aug. 19, but Samsung says the 2016 flagship will receive the upcoming Android 7.0 Nougat in two to three months, after proper testing has been administered.
"It is very important for us to offer up-to-date information with the new OS, but what's more crucial is to build a stable and seamless platform for users," Samsung Electronics President of Mobile Communications Koh Dong-jin said at a Galaxy Note 7 press conference last Thursday, according to Korea Times .
However, pundits are skeptical the Galaxy Note 7 will see an Android 7.0 update before the end of the year. Samsung’s Android update cycles are notoriously long and often broken down by market and carrier. Slashgear proposed Galaxy Note 7 models in Korea may begin to update in two to three months, while other markets, particularly the U.S., will have to wait much longer to see the latest Google software.
Handsets including the AT&T Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ only received Android 6.0 Marshmallow in late June , though the operating system released in October 2015. T-Mobile’s models updated in April, while Verizon and Sprint updated in March. To date, Android 6.0 runs on about 15 percent of Android devices overall, while most Android devices run the system version before that; Android 4.4 KitKat.
So far, there have been no leaks of Samsung’s Android 7.0 Nougat roll-out cycle and carriers have not given details on when they plan to update the Galaxy Note 7. However, Android 7.0 Nougat has not yet officially released. The fifth and final developer preview hit Nexus devices July 18, but the official software has not been made available to the public. Google has stated the OS would release in the summer, but so far there has been little indication as to just when it will debut.
