Samsung may not announce three smartphones at Mobile World Congress after all, if recent reports are to be believed. The Korean manufacturer may be gearing up to release its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones in February and a Galaxy S7 Edge+ device later in the year, according to tech informant Evan Blass.
Reports from early January suggested Samsung planned to launch a phablet alongside two standard sized smartphones. There have also been leaks of supposed 5.1-inch, 5.5-inch and 5.7-inch Galaxy S7 (S7 Edge and S7 Edge+) prototypes. Pundits speculated that Samsung would release all three Galaxy S devices together to keep consumer confusion at a minimum. However, tech blog SamMobile noted that the Galaxy S6 Edge+ launched months after the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
Typically, Samsung launches its standard sized devices in the Spring and phablets in the Fall. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ launched alongside the Galaxy Note 5 phablet in August. Samsung intended the Galaxy S6 Edge+ to be a multimedia device and the Galaxy Note 5 to be an enterprise device.
There is no word on when the Galaxy S7 Edge+ would release instead. At this time, Samsung has not commented on details regarding its Spring flagship launch.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 devices are expected to keep a design similar to that of the Galaxy S6 and will likely include a lot of updated hardware. The devices are expected to run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip or Samsung Exynos 8890 chip, depending on the model. The smartphones may also include expandable storage, which was a feature missing from the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+. The devices may also have 4GB of RAM, a 12.3-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and a 5-megapixel front camera and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow under Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.
