Samsung is using its virtual reality headset to get into the movie business. The Korean manufacturer has plans to open a virtual reality movie studio in New York City, according to CNET.
Samsung announced its plans at the Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah last week. In addition, Samsung is entering into a year-long partnership with the Sundance Institute, which hosts the yearly film festival.
Samsung has yet to divulge further details about its moving studio, such as where in NYC it will be located. However, the space is one already owned by Samsung, according to IGN. Notably, the Samsung Studio at 130 Prince Street in SoHo, New York closed late last year, though that space would likely be quite small for a movie studio. Samsung also owns the considerably larger 837 Washington Street, in the Meatpacking District, which was host to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launch in 2014.
Samsung was one of the first VR manufacturers to release its headset to market. The Samsung Gear VR currently sells for $99 at Best Buy, Amazon, through mobile carriers such as AT&T or directly from Samsung.
Powered by Oculus, the headset works with such Samsung smartphones as the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5.
