Send your best wishes to Second Life as it celebrates its 18th birthday today. To mark this milestone, several activities are available for players to enjoy.
One of the events is the Community Celebration, which actually started on June 17. Here you can explore dozens of exhibitions created and shared by the community. As of this writing, there are now 90 exhibits to visit. The event ends on July 6.
The Game
Second Life is an online virtual world that was launched back in 2003. It had experienced rapid growth and by 2013, it had reached at least one million regular users. It’s safe to say that Second Life can be considered as an MMORPG, except it has no fixed objectives, much like most things in real life.
Another unique thing with Second Life is Tilia Pay. This innovation was introduced by developer Linden Lab and is a fully licensed money service and money transmitter available for the game. It allows players to sell digital assets and provide service in return for earning real money. There’s nothing to fear since the service complies with all regulations in the US. It’s estimated that 345 million transactions are done each year within the game with at least $80 million being paid out annually to creators.
Since its release, Second Life has been referred to in popular culture. It has been featured in CSI: NY and mentioned in The Office.
Other Events
Three other events are being done in addition to the Community Celebration. There’s Meet the Lindens where players have the chance to meet the ones responsible for Second Life . It’s also a chance to learn more about future plans. Patch Linden had already taken the stage yesterday. The others are scheduled on:
- Grumpity Linden: June 23 at 5:00 p.m. ET
- Brett Linden: June 24 at 4:00 p.m. ET
- The Moles: June 25 at 4:00 p.m. ET
A Music Fest was available that concluded last week.
The last is the SL18B Shop & Hop from June 17 to July 6. There are 320 Second Life Content Creators participating and you can get exclusive items and gifts from them.
What are you waiting for? Prepare the cake and have fun.
