There are always a few surprises during Sony’s annual E3 presser. Last year, we got an early look at Days Gone, the God of War reboot and Insomniac’s Spider-man project. But this year, Sony announced the return of the greatest game in history: Shadow of the Colossus.
This isn’t another remaster of the PS2 classic, like the one bundled with ICO on PlayStation 3. Shadow of the Colossus is being rebuilt from the ground up. The story looks to be unchanged. And all the gargantuan stone creatures you regretfully slew in 2005 will have to die by your hand again when the game makes the jump to PlayStation 4. But everything will look and sound much better than it did when we explored Shadow of the Colossus more than a decade ago. And we’d like to think the controls will be a little more responsive too.
Unfortunately, this week’s reveal didn’t include the most important piece of information about Shadow of the Colossus : the release date. The lack of launch information was a bit of a surprise, given the 2017 and 2018 dates attached to just about everything else shown during PlayStation Live. It strongly suggests we won’t see the game before the end of 2017. And now we’re worried it might slip past 2018 too. It would be nice to have some idea as to when Sony and SIE Japan Studio think they’ll be ready to publish the game, if only so we know what sort of wait to prepare ourselves for. Hopefully we’ll get an update on that matter before the end of the week.
For an early look at the Shadow of the Colossus remake, take a few minutes to watch the trailer that debuted during Sony’s PlayStation Live event. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if you’re planning to revisit Shadow of the Colossus when the game hits PS4.
Shadow of the Colossus is in development for PS4 but there’s no launch timeline for the project.
