Publisher and developer Frogwares officially announced Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened, a remake of the 2007-released game from the same studio, set to be released sometime in February 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is a reimagining of the original, being rebuilt from the ground up in an all-new engine with new features and aspects for fans of both Sherlock Holmes and Cthulhu Mythos to enjoy. To celebrate the official announcement, check out the reveal trailer for Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened below.
The trailer shows Holmes and Watson in what is possibly their creepiest mystery yet, as they are facing off with a cult that seemingly has its tendrils even within the highest levels of law enforcement. It’s also a great way to show the parallels between Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary masterpiece and H.P. Lovecraft’s own nightmarish magnum opus; Sherlock Holmes is reason reincarnated, while The Great One and his works are the very enemies of reason.
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is a new detective mystery adventure game by Frogwares, the next entry to its Sherlock Holmes franchise. The original game from 2007 is one of its most popular, resulting in a remastered version released in 2008; now, it seems that the studio wants to go further and do a modern retelling of the game that put them on the map. This time, it is being developed from the ground up in Unreal Engine and will feature an expanded storyline, new numerous side quests, and new mechanics, including a unique insanity system.
The game will pit master detective Sherlock Holmes and his trusty companion, John Watson, against a series of mysterious disappearances in Europe and the US. Behind these crimes are whispers of a terrible cult that worships an Ancient God, one that will shake Holmes’ and Watson’s reasoning to the core.
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened also managed to surpass expectations as it has met its Kickstarter campaign goals. Frogwares is based in Ukraine, which is still in the midst of the war, and its efforts to still produce games despite the happenings have resulted in an outpour of support for the studio.
Frogwares also developed The Sinking City, an adventure video game adapting the works of H.P. Lovecraft, in particular, The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Check out our review of The Sinking City here.
