Fans of Sherlock have witnessed the less-obvious story arch of Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey) and Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch). From season one, it was made apparent that Molly has feelings for Sherlock and she romantically moved on in season 3 only to end up in a relationship with a man that was very similar to the eccentric detective.
That said, there could be a new love interest for Molly. Collider spoke to Rupert Graves, who plays Lestrade, during the promotion of the ABC drama series The Family and asked about a potential link up between the two characters.
“I think definitely Lestrade has got the hots for Molly. So maybe they’ll develop that,” said Graves. “We don’t know what happens until we see the scripts, and that could literally be a couple of weeks before you film.”
This would, without a doubt, upset fans who have been hoping for a Sherlock-Molly love story. Fans have been wanting a Sherlock and Molly story arch and the Oxford English Dictionary has even used the duo's chemistry to define the new word, "ship," which means to want someone to fall in love. The dictionary's example: "I'll always ship Sherlock and Molly." Could this seal the deal for the creative team to create a romance?
There is also the fact that Brealey previously told RadioTimes that fans went wild after the big kiss in season 3 in the fantasy sequence. "It went completely crackers when the show came out," Brealey told the publication recently. "I got 7,000 Twitter followers within five minutes of that kiss airing. It had doubled by the time the episode ended."
The new season of Sherlock is slated to release next year, as the show will be filming season 4 in spring 2016.
