Sonic Forces is a weird mishmash of strange design decisions and content clearly aimed at hardcore fans. It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that a "Sanic Hegehog" T-shirt previously uncovered by zealous dataminers is now officially available as DLC. Yes, as the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account reminds us, “it’s real.”
The T-shirt is emblazoned with an image of Sanic himself, a meme-tastic illustration of Sega's mascot character created in MS Paint. The T-shirt is available in blue, yellow and pink, and can be worn by any character in your Sonic Forces repertoire. The horribly drawn "fanart" has been the subject of countless viral videos and fanart from the Sonic community ever since it debuted in 2010. If you’ve ever read the phrase “gotta go fast” in relation to Sonic, then you’re probably already intimately familiar with the following behind the Sanic meme. That phrase, however, is related to another terrible Sonic drawing that doesn’t have its own official T-shirt...yet. Once again, internet culture bleeds over into the games we play in a hilarious fashion.
Sega has chosen to embrace the Sanic meme wholeheartedly, much to the delight of fans. The item’s description claims that the T-shirt features “beautifully rendered art, and virtual threads organically grown on the snowing peaks of Mt. Fuji many years ago.” Totally not, but since we pretend Sonic's diet that consists solely of chili dogs is healthy for him, we can let this one slide too.
If you're interested in outfitting your Sonic the Hedgehog OC (that's "original character" to you fanfiction newbies) with Sanic goodies, you gotta go fast to pick up your own shirt on the console of your choice. Or go at a moderate pace. These shirts aren't going anywhere.
Sonic Forces is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
