Splitgate developer 1047 Games announced that the surprise hit indie shooter will be getting a sequel that will launch sometime in 2025.

The original game garnered 22 million downloads and was well-received among players as it featured a combination of fast-paced Halo-like combat and the ability to traverse portals.

The pitch for the Splitgate sequel is clear, which is the same as its predecessor but only more expansive.

Splitgate 2 Coming in 2025

This is because the sequel will have a much bigger budget and will be worked on by a larger veteran development team. The latter would include people who have had hands-on work on Halo back in the day.

In a statement, co-founder and CEO of developer 1047 Games Ian Proulx said that the original game's development was "ambitious but scrappy."

He added that Splitgate was created from a dorm room and that the massive success it had as well as the community that it earned surpassed all of their expectations, according to Eurogamer.

Proulx also continued to describe Splitgate's sequel as a "revolutionary step forward for competitive shooters." He added that it will be a fresh entry point for newcomers and will be a new title that can be considered a worthy upgrade from the original game.

The 1047 Games CEO said that, this time around, the Splitgate sequel is being designed from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5.

This is to deliver the AAA FPS experience that fans of the series deserve. He reassured that the franchise's signature action would be completely overhauled.

For now, fans of the franchise should know that the first episode of a new digital comic series as well as unlockable content for the sequel are available at Splitgate.com.

Building the Sequel from the Ground Up

The announcement of the sequel also came alongside a cinematic trailer that gives players a glimpse of what they expect from the upcoming shooter. On top of building the sequel from the ground up, it will also be adding a new faction-based system, said The Verge.

The developer said that Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely different from its predecessor despite the familiar elements that players can expect to see. When the original game came out in 2021, it was quickly dubbed "Halo with portals."

It was able to rack up 10 million downloads in less than 30 days, but 1047 Games abruptly ended development in September 2022 in order to focus on the sequel.

In his July 18, 2024, PlayStation Blog post, Proulx said that the team was not able to make the game of their dreams.

He added that the sequel that is being worked on is the game that he dreamed of when he and Nicholas Bagamian got together in a Stanford dorm to make the original indie shooter.

The 1047 Games CEO noted that the team has been working on Splitgate 2 to make it a game that can "last a decade or more," according to GamesRadar.

The upcoming shooter Splitgate 2 will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S when it launches.
