Rihanna’s new single, “Sledgehammer” debuted Monday with the final trailer for Star Trek Beyond (Trailer #3). It’s an interesting move for a series not often associated with pop music.
The song works surprising well with the sci-fi action we’ve come to expect from the rebooted Star Trek universe, often nicknamed the “Abramsverse” after Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams. Still, it’s a novelty for the Star Trek movie series, which often come across as square even when they’re trying to be cool, like with the series’ recent fixation on the most overused Beastie Boys songs.

Star Trek Beyond Trailer #3
Across all three Star Trek Beyond trailers we’ve seen ample evidence that, at least visually, Star Trek Beyond will offer a fresh aesthetic vision, distinct from the directing style of the previous two Trek reboot movies. Justin Lin is loading this Star Trek with weird angles on the Enterprise, gorgeous new warp effects and a bold color palette.
It’s a bummer we still know so little about the plot. With Idris Elba in the role it’d be a shame if Krall, the Star Trek Beyond antagonist, turns out to be as thinly drawn as Khan and Nero. While it’s nice not to have trailers loaded with spoilers, it’s still a little surprising how little people will know about the plot of Star Trek Beyond before stepping into theaters on July 22.
