Star Wars Battlefront 2 notably spans eras from all Star Wars films, but the game’s design director, Dennis Brännvall, recently tweeted about how content will be split between online maps. Fans of the original trilogy will likely be pleased.
The conversation began when one fan brought up the fact that Brännvall mentioned his team “loved all of Star Wars” in previous interviews. When asked how that would relate to the content found in Battlefront 2, Brännvall said “we didn’t want to throw away stuff from the first game, so OG will have most.” He added, however, that “prequel and new are similar.”
There’s a lot we can speculate about given the content of this tweet, but the surface message here is that original trilogy will once again be taking center stage in the next Star Wars Battlefront. From the sounds of things, it looks like it could be a 50-25-25 split. Of course, since we don’t know how many total Battlefront 2 maps will be there at launch, or if Brännvall was including future DLC in his total, it’s hard to offer any sort of raw numbers behind the statistic.
Another interesting point of discussion is the director's suggestion that his team “didn’t want to throw away stuff from the first game.” While that statement may just apply to reusing existing assets from the original game’s Frostbite engine, it might also serve as a soft confirmation that fans can expect some of their favorite maps from 2015’s game to return. Certain locations, like Hoth or Endor, are simply too iconic to leave out of any Star Wars game, so might those existing arenas receive a new coat of paint or minor design tweaks? We already know that classic modes will be getting a similar treatment, so that much sounds viable to us.
Despite Battlefront 2’s lean toward the original trilogy, however, most of the footage the public has seen has focused on the prequels. During E3 Clones and Droids duked it out for an assault on Theed, and that’s the exact same content players will get from the game’s open beta in October.
We’ve also yet to see any content from Disney’s new trilogy, but we’d imagine with the upcoming release of The Last Jedi that some free DLC may be in order. What better way to drum up hype for the film than to let fans recreate one of its most iconic battle scenes? After all, we saw similar content drops in 2015 for Force Awakens’ Battle Of Jakku and 2016’s Rogue One Scarif expansion. It seems highly unlikely that EA or Disney would change its tune for 2017’s installment.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 17. It’s next major showcase is during D23 July 15. At the convention’s “Level Up” games panel, we expect to learn more about the single-player content offering.
