Fallout 4 was one of the biggest releases of 2015, selling millions of copies and earning roughly all of the money. After four months, we finally have our first piece of DLC, called Automatron. So how is it? Let’s get started.

There’s only one new quest line in Automatron: an army of evil robots has popped up in the Commonwealth all under the control of a mysterious figure known as The Mechanist. Players will join up with a friendly robot named Ada who will help you find out how to locate The Mechanist and end the tyranny of his robots.

Along the way, Ada will have the players perform maintenance and upgrades on her. This means you get introduced to the newest crafting station, the Robot Workbench. This workbench is by far the best addition in Automatron, as you can build and customize your own robot companions as well.

Building robots is easy enough, and works similarly to crafting power armor. Each body slot, be it the head, legs, arms or torso, can be equipped with armor and weapons. After just a few minutes tinkering around with the bench, I created a robot with an automatic laser rifle for one arm, a buzzsaw for another, and the robot floated around like a Mr. Handy. You even get the option to customize the robot’s voice and paint job.

As for the new missions in the quest line, they are all pretty typical Fallout 4 adventures. You go to an area, kill everybody and everything there and loot the right corpses for what you need. After doing this a number of times, you get to finally take on The Mechanist.

Without giving away too much, the final encounter with The Mechanist is kind of lackluster. Granted, I went the diplomatic approach, ending the final showdown before it could begin. It’s a good thing I did, as doing so unlocked a new line of infinitely-generating sidequests similar to Preston’s homestead missions. It’s probably possible you can access these side missions without taking the charismatic course of action, but I didn’t test that out for myself.

The real question most fans are probably wondering is “Is Automatron worth the price?” I would say, for only $10, yes it is. The ability to build your own robot companion is so cool it almost justifies the price by itself. The one quest line seems a little weak, but it still took me roughly seven hours to play through. Both those combine to a DLC that is fun and does a good job of getting me back into and interested in Fallout 4.

Automatron is now available to download for PS4, Xbox One and PC gamers. Fallout 4 is required in order to play Automatron . The DLC is available in the Season Pass, or can be purchased separately.

So what do you think? Are you interested in downloading the first DLC pack for Fallout 4? Do you think you’ll wait for one of the later DLC packs? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
