The Wrap asked newly announced Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi how he plans to go about imbuing more comedy in the upcoming Thor sequel. “Just fill it with jokes,” Waititi responded. Believe it or not, this is one of the most exciting developments for Marvel movies.
After the disappointing reception for Thor: The Dark World, Marvel looks to be pulling out all the stops with Ragnarok. Thor will be joined by The Hulk , one of Marvel’s most popular on-screen characters, for what Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo described to Empire as a “universal road movie.”
“There’s a little bit of Midnight Run, with Grodin and De Niro. I feel like that’s kind of where we’re heading with this relationship between Thor and Banner,” Ruffalo said. “It’s not your classic road movie but it has that structure, I think.”
Taika Waititi On ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
Marvel picked up Waititi after the success of his vampires movie, What We Do in the Shadows, which turned every hoary, old bloodsucker trope to something genuinely fresh and new.
The sequel, starring the werewolves from What We Do in the Shadows, has the best title ever: We’re Wolves. As a director Waititi continues to refine the most unique comedic voice to appear on the global movie scene since Edgar Wright blew us all away with Shaun of the Dead in 2004.
Whatever your thoughts on the Marvel movies, there’s been no shortage of interesting and smart directorial picks from Marvel Studios . It hired a splatter-horror guy to do Guardians of the Galaxy and gave Iron Man 3 to action screenwriting legend Shane Black. In hindsight it’s hard to imagine anyone but Joss Whedon steering The Avengers, but it sure felt like a bold move at the time.
With Ryan Coogler tackling Black Panther and Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok , the future of the Marvel universe looks just as intriguing.
