Drafthouse Films, the distribution offshoot of the Alamo Drafthouse cinema chain, has picked up a lot of steam since debuting with British terrorist comedy Four Lions in 2010. But while its distribution of recent indie movies like Wrong, Borgman and A Field in England has been a boon for psychotronic-inclined moviegoers, it’s often their repertory finds that have been the most outrageous. So Drafthouse Films’ plans to premiere a new excavated slice of crazy, what they’re calling “The Holy Grail of holy fucking shit,” may prove the most memorable release to come out of Fantastic Fest 2015.
Whatever this Holy Grail turns out to be, it will be joining The Visitor, Miami Connection and Roar in one of the most idiosyncratic and jaw-dropping canons currently under construction. Here’s the teaser trailer, which unveils approximately nothing, but reminds us of everything that has made Drafthouse Films so fun:
Drafthouse Films Premiere at Fantastic Fest 2015
The new movie will be distributed thanks to the efforts of the American Genre Film Archive (A.G.F.A.) who tracked down a pristine 35mm print of the mystery movie. Here’s how Drafthouse Films C.O.O. James Shapiro described their first screening:
“People burst out in applause multiple times during the screening. My brain didn't know how to process it. It was partially melted with joy, partially frozen by fear ("WHAT THE FUCK DID I GET MYSELF INTO"). One thing was clear: we had to try to get it. Everyone wanted us to get this. My new boss, Tim League, wanted us to get this.”
It’s hard to imagine Drafthouse Films topping Roar, but it’ll be exciting to see this “Holy Grail of holy fucking shit” give it a try.
