The Marvel Star Wars roll-out continued this month with the release of Star Wars #2 and new series premiere of Darth Vader #1. The expansion of the Marvel Star Wars universe continues next month with the premiere issue of the third planned Star Wars comic series: Princess Leia #1.

While Princess Leia #1 won’t be shipped out to comic stores until March 4, you can expect the same crazy panoply of variant covers when Princess Leia #1 finally arrives. To help with the wait, check out four of the variant covers for the upcoming Star Wars comic premiere, Princess Leia #1. If Star Wars means to you what it does to me, then one of the Princess Leia #1 variants is likely to get your peepers misty.

Princess Leia #1 - What is the New Star Wars Comic About?

Just like the other Marvel Star Wars comics, Star Wars and Darth Vader, Princess Leia is set after the original Star Wars movie. The Evil Empire is on the ropes, having lost the Death Star to the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Yavin. The Rebel Alliance is hoping to push its advantage, but one of its greatest leaders, Princess Leia Organa, is reeling under the loss of her home planet of Alderaan.

Here’s what Princess Leia writer Mark Waid had to say to Comic Book Resources about the dark days ahead for Princess Leia as she copes with the destruction of Alderaan:

“How does she really cope with losing her entire world once the events around that loss have calmed down somewhat? Does she choose to be a princess of nothing – or does she set out to rebuild her heritage and civilization?”

The identity of the new X-Wing pilot is unknown at this time, but it seems she’ll be a big part of the narrative, since she’s featured on the cover for Princess Leia #3:

Unlike Star Wars #1 and Darth Vader #1, which both take place at some unspecified time after the destruction of the first Death Star and before Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, Princess Leia #1 opens concurrent with the final throne room scene of Star Wars.

Current plot synopses suggest that the Princess Leia comic mini-series will involve Leia Organa tracking down survivors of the destruction of Alderaan, but we’ll know for sure when Princess Leia #1 comes out on March 4.

Enough speculation about the plot, check out these variant covers for Princess Leia #1:

Star Wars Tear Time

Sorry, I think I've got something stuck in my eye.
Sorry, I think I've got something stuck in my eye. Marvel

This stark entry from John Cassaday captures Leia’s despair at the shocking destruction of Alderaan, with its stark blacks and oppressive shadows. But that quote, delivered here as an epitaph for an entire way of life lost, promises the opportunity for a new hope for Princess Leia within the Rebel Alliance.
