Anticipation for Suicide Squad is rising as we draw closer to the film’s August release date. DC fans were already hyped thanks to a couple of enticing trailers showcasing a star-studded cast. Last month, the first unofficial reviews appeared online, which fortunately portrayed Suicide Squad in a positive light. Despite the buzz surrounding the film, Warner Bros.’ marketing department isn’t stopping quite yet. The studio has released a new TV spot featuring everyone’s favorite antiheroes.
A majority of the footage draws from past Suicide Squad trailers, but the commericial shares a nice moment between Deadshot (Will Smith) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). “I’m not a hugger,” Deadshot says to Flag after being congratulated for hitting the target. It’s a nice little moment that elicits a chuckle of excitement. It seems like Suicide Squad has found a solid balance between action, comedy and drama.
Most of the attention surrounding Suicide Squad has been centered on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jared Leto’s Joker. While the pair will obviously play pivotal roles in the movie, Suicide Squad is an ensemble film that requires a range of performances. Even mega-stars like Will Smith have taken a backseat in this production, which suggests an emphasis on teamwork throughout DC’s latest adventure.
Suicide Squad is DC and Warner Bros.’ opportunity to redeem themselves following the failure of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. If the early reviews are anything to go by, this new chapter appears to be in good hands. Suicide Squad will have a significant presence at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see another or trailer or two before the film arrives later this summer.
Suicide Squad opens in theaters Aug. 6. Stay tuned for updates.
