The Super Mario Maker port for the Nintendo 3DS is coming in December, and the surprise hit for the Wii U will allow players to create Mario levels anywhere. Like the Wii U version, it seems amiibos will be compatible with Mario Maker for 3DS.
UPDATE: A Nintendo representative has told us that Super Mario Maker for 3DS won't have amiibo compatibility. We will update with a statment soon.
The official Nintendo amiibo compatibility site shows a list of current and past games that are able to use amiibo. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see two titles that are under “Upcoming amiibo-compatible Games,” Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo 3DS.
Amiibo compatibility for Super Mario Maker 3DS was not confirmed when it was announced or in the subsequent trailers that were released since. We even asked a Nintendo rep when we had some hands-on time with the title if the game could use amiibo, and were told they couldn’t say.
Super Mario Maker 3DS will bring a lot of the level creation that made the Wii U version great, but won’t have level sharing or the ability to go online to play other people’s levels. But it was only a matter of time that the 3DS version got confirmation that it will share amiibo compatibility.
Hopefully this version of the game will allow for all of the amiibo to be used; it will be fun to create a Metroid stage again.
Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo 3DS will release Dec. 2.
