Super Mario Odyssey has a whole lot of familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom to either help or challenge our favorite red plumber. However, one character who’s noticeably missing is Mario’s trusty dinosaur partner, Yoshi. He was absent in the main story of Odyssey , but could a game that brought in so many nods and characters to past games really leave out Yoshi?
SPOILERS AHEAD! If you don’t want to know story details, don’t proceed any further.
In short, Yoshi IS in Super Mario Odyssey , but you can’t see him until after you complete the main story.
Once you’ve foiled Bowser’s wedding plans, you’ll be sent to the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time. After speaking with the Toads near and inside Peach’s Castle, you’ll want to get to the roof. Up there you’ll notice a few things, most notably a green egg.
Fans of the Mario series will know that egg contains Yoshi. Go up to it and hit it with Cappy to reveal Yoshi. He won’t say anything and won’t walk away, giving Mario and Cappy the opportunity to capture him. Toss Cappy at Yoshi and you’ll become the green dinosaur. As Yoshi, players can grab hard-to-reach items by sticking out his tongue. You can also use Yoshi’s signature flutter ability to stay in the air a bit longer.
Mario also runs faster when he is Yoshi, so keep that in mind. You’ll need to become Yoshi to get some of the Power Moons in the Mushroom Kingdom. The Power Moons that only Yoshi can get have to do with the floating fruits you see on the top of Peach’s Castle and scattered throughout the Kingdom.
Go ahead and explore the Kingdom with Yoshi to eat all 30 fruit to grab your extra Power Moons.
