If you’ve seen Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows then you’re probably already excited for the third Thor movie, Ragnarok. Waititi has a more distinct voice than any other director since Marvel dropped Edgar Wright from Ant-Man. The Marvel movies have always been funny, but Thor: Ragnarok is shaping up to be the most intentionally lighthearted and comedic since Guardians of the Galaxy or even the original Iron Man. Two cast members, Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum, have explained why.
"I think tonally it’s a big shift in a great way, more than anything we’ve seen before," Hemsworth, who plays Thor, said at Wizard World. "Taika Waititi, the director, if you know any of his work, he’s just an incredible sort of comedic talent a lot of heart in everything he does. It’s a very different Thor, it’s a different Loki. We go off on another world that we haven’t experienced before.”
But it’s Jeff Goldbum, who will play a hedonistic godling named the Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok, who makes the best case for how Thor: Ragnarok is quietly becoming on the most exciting upcoming Marvel movies. Waititi “is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own and that’s what I’m trying to do,” Goldblum told Empire. “I love Taika Waititi.”
The lineup of Marvel films after Captain America: Civil War is looking better and better. From Coogler’s Black Panther to this new and weird Thor sequel (plus Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy 2), the future of the Marvel cinematic universe is shaping up to be an exciting one.
