Twitter has just hired Alessandro Sabatelli as its new Director of VR and AR, reports Engadget. The social media company spoke with Engadget’s Andrew Tarantola and confirmed the appointment.
Credited with helping to create the iTunes visualizer, Sabatelli used to work for Apple as a UI designer before moving on from Cupertino to work at IXOMOXI. At IXOMOXI, Sabatelli helped developed contextual overlays for AR and VR visualization systems.
Twitter also recently acquired Magic Pony Technology earlier this month, a startup that uses neural networks and machine learning to improve images. Both Magic Pony and Sabetelli are rolled into one particular division within Twitter that is called the Cortex division.
The Cortex division is tasked with applying the advantages of machine learning at Twitter. According to Tarantola, this could one day mean technology like live streaming, 3D Periscope videos that won’t hog up all your mobile bandwidth.
