Great news for fans of Tyranny : Tyranny: Bastard’s Wound : an upcoming expansion coming later this year that promises “a new major quest line set in the mysterious illegal settlement of Bastard’s Wound.” Check out the teaser trailer below:
Obsidian and Paradox’s RPG from late last year puts players in the role of a high-ranking Evil Overlord minion and forces them to choose between doing bad, doing worse, doing good, obeying orders, and doing what’s best for themselves. The world is rich enough to allow for a wealth of choices, many of which are darker and more vile than even the most choice-friendly games permit.
Want to help the doomed resistance take back their homeland, the one corner of the world not yet ruled by Kyros the Overlord? Sure! Want to take the Overlord’s seat? Sure! Want money? Sure! You can do it all and more under the Overlord’s evil, evil banner.
In Tyranny ’s upcoming expansion pack, players get another meaty set of choices as they encounter a settlement called Bastard’s Wound, “established in secret as a haven for those fleeing the wrath of Kyros the Overlord.” It’s up to the player to hand out Kyros’ justice and choose these people’s fates.
The Bastard’s Wound expansion will feature new characters and storylines, along with a closer look at the Beastmen race. (If you slaughtered them all the first time around, like I did, this comes as a welcome second chance to investigate their lore more closely.) There will also be new companion quests for Verse, Barik and Lantry, fan favorites from the base game whose juicy backstories were ripe for further explorations.
Bastard’s Wound arrives later this year, accompanied by a free update to Tyranny , which includes “new voice acting, expanded content in the game’s third act, and an all-new path to an unseen ending.” That free update will focus on mechanical improvements “including a revised skill training system, numerous combat balance tweaks, and the ability to retrain and respec your Fatebinder and companions.” It will also add a New Game Plus mode.
Players can also enjoy new content starting today thanks to new event pack “Tales from the Tiers.” The event pack includes new random encounter events, quests, and interactions with Tyranny characters, allowing players to “experience a new facet of the game’s rich and compelling story.”
In our review, we called Tyranny “richly fleshed-out, crammed with lore, packed with fun mechanics and so generous in terms of its choices that you may need three or four playthroughs before you grok the depths of what Paradox and Obsidian have offered.”
While we experienced a few serious bugs, including one that halted the course of a quest and another that completely eliminated the ending screens, we still praised the game’s writing, branching paths, level design and use of magic .
“Missing ending, funky pacing and all, I still sunk 50 hours into a 20-hour campaign and highly recommend that any fan of great writing, dense lore and branching paths spend some time in the world of Terratus,” our review concluded.
Are you excited to return to the world of Tyranny and make new choices in its expanded landscape? Have you had a chance to tinker with “Tales from the Tiers?” What do you think of Bastard’s Wound so far? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
(PS: Tyranny is currently 33% off via Paradox and 50% off on Steam until Thurs., June 15, so if you don’t know what all the fuss is about, now’s the time to check it out.)
