Sony is giving away two games for free as part of their new Play At Home initiative, designed to help those of us who are socially distancing at home. You can pick up Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free from April 15 through May 5 on the PlayStation Store. In Germany and China, users will have access to Knack 2 and Journey for free for a limited time. You do not need an active PlayStation Plus membership to grab these games. But, if you want monthly PSN+ games an active membership will be needed.
“People all over the world are doing the right thing by staying home to help contain the spread of COVID–19. We are deeply grateful to everyone practicing physical distancing and take our responsibility as a home entertainment platform seriously, so we are asking our community to continue supporting the safe choice and the need to Play At Home," Jim Ryan, the President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated. "Play At Home has two components: first, providing free games to help keep the PlayStation community entertained at home; and finally, establishing a fund to help smaller independent game studios who may be experiencing financial difficulties continue building great experiences for all gamers.”
As a part of its Play At Home Initiative, Sony also developed a fund supporting smaller game developers by donating $10 Million to independent studios.
If you do download these games, expect the download speeds to be slower than usual. Sony decided to slow download speeds during the ongoing pandemic as they want to help save data usage. Sony stated in a post that “Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community, and their doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone.”
