There are two big reasons why fans of Unpacking should be happy. The first is that the game just celebrated its first anniversary. Within that time, more than a million copies have been sold. Good news indeed!
The second reason is the game being sold at 30% off at Steam as part of the celebration. Different merchandise is on sale as well, including:
- Fabric storage cube ($19.99)
- Enamel pin set of different achievements in-game ($24.99)
- Keychains
- Pig & Tiger ($9.99)
- Hen & Chicks ($9.99)
- T-shirts
- Unpacking a Life With You T-Shirt ($29.99)
- Piggy Pocket T-Shirt ($29.99)
- Fruit coasters ($14.99)
Unpacking is a puzzle video game released on November 2, 2021 on PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It was then ported to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in May 2022.
The game is what you would expect it to be based on the title. It introduces you to that rather familiar experience of getting things out of a box and putting them in a new home. It’s part home decoration and part block-fitting puzzle. Over the course of creating a satisfying living space, players also get clues on the life that they're unpacking. There's a total of eight house moves and each one gives players the chance to experience a sense of intimacy with a character they never see and a story they're never told.
Key features of the game include:
- Unpack a home — from a single bedroom to an entire house.
- Meditative gameplay with no timers, meters or scores.
- Explore domestic environments with all their nooks and crannies while you stack plates, hang towels, and arrange bookshelves.
- Discover a character's story through the items that come with her to each new home (and the items that get left behind).
- Soundtrack by BAFTA award-winning composer and audio director Jeff van Dyck.
The game may be simple, but it has received a lot of accolades. In 2021, it won Game of the Year and Excellence in Accessibility during the Australian Game Developer Awards. This year, it added the Innovation Award and Best Narrative at the Game Developers Choice Awards, and EE Game of the Year at the 18th British Academy Games Awards. It was also recognized as Best LGBTQ Indie Game and Authentic Representation Award during the Gayming Awards 2022.
