Atlus has released a new trailer for the English-language release of its upcoming strategy RPG / visual novel, Utawarerumono: Mask Of Deception. In it, we get a brief introduction to our the game’s unlikely hero, Haku, and a fresh look at the game’s combat system.
The story begins with a young man, wandering aimlessly on a snowy mountain, wearing nothing but a flimsy hospital gown. He doesn’t know how he got there, and can’t remember who he is. He’s rescued by a lovely cat-eared lady named Kuon, who gives him the name Haku. With Kuon by his side, the reluctant Haku sets out to become a more accomplished fighter (by the looks of things in the trailer, he starts off pretty weak). Over time, their journey will find them deeply entangled in the politics of the formidable nation of Yamato.

The latter half of the trailer offers a glimpse at Mask Of Deception’s unique mix of turn-based SRPG combat and more action-focused Attack Chain combo mechanics. “Players can remain active during combat by successfully completing timing-based charging rings to execute critical attacks or vital dodges/blocks,” Atlus said in a press release accompanying the new Utawarerumono trailer. “Unique combat features such as the rewind function, elemental affinities/weaknesses, unique character skills, and more add a layer of depth to fights.
