Frankly, I’m pretty proud of myself for calling ReLife as one of the anime that would be added to the slate, but none of my other picks made it. I’m actually really surprised Erased didn’t make it to the list, since it’s a high-quality, binge-worthy recent hit.
I’m also happy to see Free! Iwatobi Swim Club on the list, since it and Yuri!!! On Ice are not only wildly popular, but definitely skew towards a demographic that might not spend loads of time on Twitch. Bungo Stray Dogs is another show I love that I’m really happy to see it on the list. BSD is a series with great crossover appeal – its blend of action, mystery and pretty boys leaves a little something for everyone.
There’s also plenty of cute girl moe stuff for the usual suspects. I can’t believe I didn’t pick Kemono Friends. Anne Happy’s slot could have been taken up by any recent cheerful moe anime (I would have preferred something joyful but a little meatier, like Shirobako, in there instead). Sound Euphonium is a total, total must for that KyoAni sparkle (along with Free!).
I’m grinding my teeth over not seeing Saga of Tanya the Evil or Kemono Friends would be on the list – so popular, so much buzz, such obvious choices – and am frankly a bit surprised by JOKER GAME, which I found dour and a little boring (It should have been Erased).
Other picks that surprised me include World’s End, Ojisan and Marshmallow, Wooser's Hand-to-Mouth Life and Akashic Record. I just didn’t think any of these were particularly good or fun. If we needed yet another light novel adaptation, I would have replaced World’s End or Akashic Record with Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?, which is a recent hit with reasonable technical merit that won even me over. (Plus, Hestia emote!! HESTIA EMOTE. )
Overall, I have to say this is an impressive line-up of hits that should please both old and new corners of the Twitch audience. Twitch will release exclusive emotes themed after some of the series shown in the marathon and the emotes will be accessible to viewers who subscribe to the TwitchPresents channel. I’m looking forward to seeing how the marathon goes and what kind of new emotes we’ll be getting. Will you be watching? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
