Episode 11 ended with April confessing to Arizona that she’s pregnant, just hours after she met with Jackson and their lawyers to sign divorce papers. The entire episode revolves around April and Jackson’s relationship, rewinding all the way back to when they were interns at Mercy West Hospital.
We see several previously known details about April and Jackson, including the fact that April was served her divorce papers in the ER at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital while working. This coincides with when a patient attacked Meredith. In Episode 9, we see Meredith watching April and Jackson fight from the window of her hospital room, while Episode 11 gives us April and Jackson’s perspective on the scene.
While in marriage counseling, a therapist tells the couple they should refrain from having sex while deciding whether they want to remain together. Of course they do not heed this advice, which confuses things for Jackson in particular, as he was certain early on he wanted a divorce.
We learn that despite his misgivings, Jackson decided to join April on her second tour to Jordan, where she went in Season 11 after the death of their son, Samuel. However, Jackson ends up missing his flight and gets left behind. He continues to deal with the loss of Samuel on his own while April is in Jordan. During Christmas, April tries to contact Jackson but is unable to get through due to a bad phone connection. Jackson instead receives support from others at the hospital, including Ben, his mother and a patient, with whom he’s grown close.
Prior to her first tour to Jordan, April was mourning deeply in the immediate aftermath of Samuel’s death. She refused to return to work, and when Jackson suggests they try for another baby, she gets angry with him.
The episode also looks back to the moment everyone in the hospital learned that April was pregnant. Jackson and April were in a break room dancing at having recently learned the news themselves. Several doctors, including, Arizona, Meredith, Richard, Alex, Callie enter the room and immediately begin dancing as well. Callie then asks if they are celebrating the new baby, inadvertently spilling the beans.
We flash back to Jackson and April arguing about their views on religion in the early days of their marriage. April is very religious, while Jackson is not. This longstanding source of contention continues to be an issue after get married. We also see what happened in the aftermath of Jackson and April running out of her wedding to paramedic, Matthew Taylor, which took place in Season 10. While fleeing, the two stop for food and Jackson accidentally spills ketchup on her wedding dress. They stop at a costume shop to find April a new dress, while Jackson searches for someone to marry them. He originally finds a Justice of the Peace, but April insists she needs a minister to marry them so that God would be at her wedding. Jackson’s obliges on the condition that he can continue to have Sundays for watching football.
The episode goes all the way back to before April and Jackson were dating, after the shooting that took place in Season 6. The two residents walk into a hall, which April remembers as the spot where she found one of their colleagues was shot and killed.
She tells Jackson that during the crisis she could only think about not wanting to die a virgin and Jackson makes a joke about how her sexual status could easily be changed. The moment becomes awkward, but the two actually do begin a sexual relationship not long after that.
The final recap scene shows a group of Mercy West interns, including some who died in the Season 6 shooting, discussing possible specialties with an instructor. The interns realize that Jackson is an Avery, a notable family in the medical field. April tells the group her fields of interest are those that would allow her the time to raise a family. Jackson rolls his eyes as April goes on talking, neither ever imagining what would come to pass.
In Episode 12, Jackson and April are back to work and co-existing as a divorced couple. Arizona urges April to tell Jackson that she’s pregnant, but she says she is not ready.
Meredith, Amelia and Stephanie are working on an old case of Derek’s from Season 1. The patient, Katie Bryce was one of the first showcased on the series. She had a brain aneurysm, causing her to have seizures and injurw herself during a rhythmic gymnastics competition. Derek clipped the aneurysm back in Season 1; however, Amelia seems to believe that Katie’s return could be due to a complication from Derek’s surgery. Meredith considers that Katie could have a tumor.
Meanwhile, the fate of Alex and Jo’s relationship is uncertain, as Jo has not given Alex an answer to his marriage proposal. Jo asks Alex if he’s returned the ring, and Alex is considered that her question is an indication she does not want to marry him. The two remain at an impasse.
In episode 10, Richard learns that a new intern, Andrew DeLuca is seeing someone in the hospital. He does not know DeLuca is dating his daughter, Maggie. Few people at the hospital know that Richard is Maggie’s biological father. and Maggie has not shared this with DeLuca. It’s all fun and games while Maggie and DeLuca are sneaking around the hospital, but no one is happy when the truth comes out.
