Episode 8 ended with Amelia seemingly on the verge of relapse. She is at Joe’s bar following an argument with Meredith. We know that Amelia is a recovering drug addict and she has been struggling with trying to not use since her brother, Derek’s death.
Amelia was angry with Meredith for not telling her what was why Owen is so upset about Dr. Nathan Riggs’ presence in the hospital. Both Owen and his mother have confided in Meredith and Amelia feels left out. All we know at this point is that Riggs is somehow connected to a sister Owen didn’t tell anyone her had.
Amelia tells Meredith off and Meredith kicks Amelia out of her home. The last we see Amelia, she is at Joe’s bar drinking, when she is approached by Riggs.
Meanwhile, Alex and Jo were arguing over Alex’s close relationship with Meredith. Alex tries to explain to Jo why he protects Meredith; however, Jo feels like Alex “isn’t in her corner.” She attempts to break up with him, but Alex presents her with a ring and a marriage proposal. At this point, we don’t know if she’s said yes.
Jackson and April’s marriage also still hangs in the balance after April spends a considerable amount of time avoiding Jackson after the two ended up in bed together amid their separation. April is certain that Jackson does not want to stay with her, but at we still do not know his response.
In Episode 9, Meredith is attacked by a patient who’s recently had a seizure. Penny finds her on the floor, conscious but badly hurt. The patient, loses consciousness and is lying on the floor next to her. Doctors including Maggie, Alex, Richard, Owen, Amelia and Ben are working to assess her injuries. They agree to not tell Chief Bailey, as she’s “already got enough on her plate.”
The patient who attacked Meredith is likely from an emergency she, Maggie and Alex passed on their way to the hospital. They see several ambulances and fire trucks pass their car while they are stuck in traffic. Alex gets out of the car to investigate but at the moment we don’t know what has happened.
Ben says the patient has been restrained and was likely in a temporary fugue state when he attacked Meredith. This outburst is supposedly common for seizure sufferers; however, he showed no aggressive behavior prior to coming into contact with Meredith. As Meredith slips in and out of conciousness, she appears to hallucinate Derek.
Meanwhile, Alex appears to still be having relationship trouble with Jo, as he sleeping at Meredith’s and overhearing Maggie’s late night trysts with Dr. DeLuca, the intern.
Amelia is also not doing well in the aftermath of Meredith’s attack. We see her huddled in a corner as the other doctors work on Meredith.
