EA unveiled A Way Out , a new game created in partnership with indie developer Hazelight, during E3 2017. The game follows to inmates, Leo and Vincent, as they try to break out of prison and make their way back into the real world.
A Way Out appears to put a new spin on the traditional co-op play format. For example, one player might have to watch a cutscene while the other has to find their way out of a room. Or one player might have to drive a car while the other handles shooting at enemies. Players will also have to actively work together and time their actions to get out of tough situations, according the gameplay teased during E3. Leo and Vincent will provide different perspectives for the players.
"This game is going to bring a co-op experience unlike anything you have ever seen before," said Josef Fares, Writer and Director at Hazelight, in a release. "The idea for A Way Out came when me and a friend tried to find a story driven co-op game that wasn't a drop-in/drop-out experience. We simply could not find a game like that. We're also bringing an innovative look into how to tell the story of both these characters.
Fares added, “Players will be immersed in the game with the way we change the display from a full screen experience seamlessly to different cinematic split-screen formats. By focusing on the two characters in different ways, it opens up a huge variety of gameplay, as we really wanted to avoid repetitions so they will get to know the characters through very different situations."
You’ll be able to experience A Way Out with a friend in-person or online. The gameplay will include car chases, stealth passages, melee fights, shootouts and much more. The story progresses differently depending on how each player builds their relationships as Leo and Vincent. No EA didn’t released much information about the characters’ background, but the teaser did reveal bits of their lives.
"Josef and his team at Hazelight represent everything that EA Originals stands for," said Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President of EA Worldwide Studios, in a release. "They are a small and very talented group with a vision and passion for a game that is truly unique in the video game industry. A Way Out is going to surprise people with its innovative co-op gameplay and the way it tells an emotional story solely through these two characters."
A Way Out was just one of many titles shown at EA’s E3 press conference. The studio showed off Madden 18 , Star Wars: Battlefront 2 , NBA Live 18 , FIFA 18, Need For Speed and teased a new IP called Anthem, which more details will be released during Microsoft’s press conference.
A Way Out will be available as a digital download in 2018 on PC via Origin, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
