We Happy Few is getting a price increase, which could point to a full release coming sooner rather than later. This information comes from a post on developer Compulsion Games’ site.
Since entering Steam Early Access, We Happy Few has not been reduced in price. This is because the developers felt that would do a disservice to those who backed the game when it was raising funds on Kickstarter.
“Since 2015, we have made clear that the price would increase as we approach the final release, and that time has - finally - come,” the post reads. “On August 16, the price for the game will become US$50.99.”
That may sound like an odd amount for a game, and it is! Games traditionally are sold at an $X9.99 price. There could be a reason for this, as the developers say there is more to the price hike that hasn’t been announced yet.
“We will explain everything in more detail on the 16th. As you can imagine, there is more to the story, and we are looking forward to sharing all the juicy details with you,” the post reads. “We always do our best to be transparent with you guys, so we felt it was important to provide this pricing information with ample time for you to make a decision. And, just to be clear, if you are a Kickstarter backer or Early Access player, this change does not affect you.”
If you want to get a copy of We Happy Few before the price hike, act fast. Those who have a copy of the game at the Early Access price of $29.99 will get the full game when it is released.
It’s curious to think of what this price hike means. While the post says the cost will increase “as we approach the final release,” there is no mention of a final release in the post. This could mean the $50.99 price will represent one final step before a full release. Or this could just be the worst way to announce a full release, with a price hike and vague wording. It seems we’ll have to pay attention to what Compulsion Games will be posting on Aug. 16 to know the full story.
So what do you think? Will you be picking up a copy of We Happy Few before the price rises on Aug. 16? Do you think this means a full release is coming soon? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
