Giant Sparrow’s widely acclaimed narrative adventure What Remains of Edith Finch comes to Xbox One July 19. The game, published by Annapurna Interactive, is currently available on PS4 and PC.
"It's very exciting to be coming out on the Xbox next week, giving a whole new group of players a chance to experience the game,” Ian Dallas, creative director at Giant Sparrow, told Player.One. "After the initial release I figured the requests from Xbox players would die down after a few weeks, but if anything it seems like it's gotten louder. It's nice that, unlike a lot of stories in the game itself, this particular story has a happy ending."
What Remains of Edith Finch sees players taking the role of the titular Edith, exploring her family home in Washington state in order to figure out why she’s the last one left alive. Along the way, Edith learns more about the background of numerous family members, exploring their lives through stories which encompass the distant past as well as the present day.
What Remains of Edith Finch is a story-driven game, so there’s less emphasis on timely button-mashing and more of a focus on character and plot. That said, each family member’s story has a unique gameplay mechanic that is integral to its tale. In one, you kick your feet on a swing using both control sticks as Edith’s brother pays tribute to her personality. In another you’re a laughing infant in a bathtub, making a frog bounce up and down on a toy whale.
Edith Finch earned widespread praise after making its PS4 and PC debut back in April, with the game’s Metacritic score at a solid 88. Player. One’s own ND Medina gave the game a perfect score, calling it an “atmospheric rumination on loss, grief, stories, heritage and despair” and noting “that’s only one movie ticket in New York City, and I got a lot more out of What Remains of Edith Finch than I usually get out of the latest popcorn flick.”
