Empire promos have teased for weeks that “a Lyon will fall;” however, it wasn’t the Lyon many expected. Now that we know Jamal is alive, but not so well, the tables have turned toward someone else in the family. We believe the Lyon who fell is Rhonda Lyon.
Actress, Gabourey Sidibe teased in a first look video for the final episode of Empire Season 2 called “Past is Prologue” that someone would die, just as someone also died in the finale Season 1. Actress Grace Gealy called the death a “game changer” that would “shift the positions of the characters on a second.”
During the episode, Anika and Rhonda have a final confrontation, where Anika admits to pushing Rhonda down the stairs. The two fight on a balcony until someone falls to their death. Andre enters the balcony to see the fall.
Rhonda appears to be the most obvious choice as her death would completely destroy Andre. The two were already in a rocky place prior to this incident. Anika is now a Lyon so it could very well be her; however, Empire producer Ilene Chaiken revealed to TV Line a tidbit that might give away the whole surprise ending. According to the producer, Hakeem will deal with the aftermath of being left at the altar and the reality of becoming a father in Season 3, indicating that Anika is the one who survives.
“Hakeem needs to regain his dignity, and hip-hop is going to play a big part of that,” Chaiken told TV Line. “Given who Hakeem is, though, you can expect him to get into some trouble. He also has a baby on the way.”
At this time, there is no way to know exactly who fell down the stairs (though Anika pushing Rhonda down the stairs was easily one of TV’s worst kept secrets). The truth likely won’t be revealed until Empire returns in the fall.
Meanwhile, here’s more about what happened leading up to the fight
Rhonda confronted Anika with a right hook and several choice words in the episode opening. Rhonda accused Anika of pushing her down the stairs in front of the Lyon family, explaining that she remembered seeing someone exit her home wearing a pair of Louboutin flats. However, Anika denied this. Instead of defending his wife, Andre apologized to the family for Rhonda’s outburst.
Upset and confused, Rhonda reminded Andre that he originally planted the idea that someone pushed her down the stairs, claiming to have had visions sent by God. But Andre now believes the visions were caused by manic state due to his bipolar disorder and not warning from a higher power. Rhonda decides to get some space from Andre and his family.
In a calculated move, Anika sat on the edge of a balcony, threatening to commit suicide so she wouldn’t have to testify against Lucious in court (the FBI is investigating him for four murders he committed nearly 20 years ago). Cookie talks her off the ledge by telling her she’s “a Lyon now” because she is pregnant with Hakeem’s child.
Anika got served with an order to testify against Lucious during Hakeem’s wedding, which triggered a brawl involving some unsavory wedding guests. When Laura saw this she called off the wedding. Lucious then suggested he and Anika get married so she won’t legally be bound to testify against him.
The wedding continues with Andre, who became ordained to marry Hakeem and Laura, instead marrying Lucious and Anika. As the newly married couple walked down the isle, Lucious old Anika he knew that she pushed Rhonda.
While an exchange took place between Lucious and an FBI agent named Tariq, who we learned is Lucious’ half brother, Anika sliped away to an empty balcony. Rhonda approached her and again accused Anika of pushing her down the stairs so that her own baby would be the sole Lyon heir. Rhonda responded “You’re damn right I did it, you bitch” as the two get into a heated fight with both women leaning the other over the balcony. Andre entered the balcony upon his father’s request to find Anika and saw the women fighting. However, this is when we heard the long scream of someone falling off the balcony.
