The Witcher 3 will be getting a 4K update after all. This news was first mentioned at the E3 2017 Xbox press conference, and later confirmed by developer CD Projekt RED. An image of The Witcher 3 was seen when Microsoft was commenting on the different games that will be enhanced once the new Xbox One X console is released.
"I can confirm that we are working both on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro patches for The Witcher 3," CD Projekt RED told Eurogamer. "No extra details at this moment. More info is coming." This has also been confirmed in a tweet from the Community Lead for CD Projekt RED.
Curiously, CD Projekt RED had previously mentioned there would not be a PS4 Pro patch coming for The Witcher 3:
"Since we want to fully focus on Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent, and converting The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from a full HD game into a 4K one would be too much of a time and resource-consuming process, we decided not to release an edition of Wild Hunt supporting the new features of PlayStation Pro," CD Projekt Red told Eurogamer back in September.
Why the change of heart? It could be that the company wanted to wait until Microsoft’s new console was out to ensure any 4K patches would work for both systems. That would save some time and stress by developing only one patch at one time instead of two patches, or one patch that would require several updates.
If we want to get cynical, it could also be that Microsoft wanted the biggest games to be featured the most, so the company plopped a big pile of cash on the desk of CD Projekt RED and told them to get to work.
Whatever the reason behind the decision, CD Projekt RED is keeping details close to the chest for now. If The Witcher 3 is anything like Gear of War 4, then a 4K Xbox One X patch will be releasing the same day as the console, Nov. 7.
