Depending on your choices, the ending of the Witcher 3 was a pretty exhilarating teaser for a stand alone Ciri project. The prospect of revisiting the darkly humorous world realized so masterfully by CD Projekt Red through the eyes of a young fledgling monster hunter is a prescription for a hell of a game. CD Projekt Red has not completely expelled the idea of returning to the Witcher series, but they seem fairly convinced that Geralt’s story satisfyingly ran it course. I don’t at all disagree.
I think having Ciri serve as the protagonist for a future installment is a good way to remain true to the gameplay and tone established in previous games while building upon it when a fresh new perspective. Not only is Ciri much more of a novice than Gerald at the whole witcher thing, she’s also a superhuman with the blood of a god and ties to the Kingdom of Nilfgaard. A green light to really double down on all the epic, supernatural, political intrigue stuff found in the first three titles.
Another Witcher sequel of any kind is most certainly quite aways off, given CD Projekt Red’s devotion to the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. That’s for the better, if Ciri is ever going to get a chance to helm a series of her own sufficient time should be allowed to pass between her and the White Wolf’s run. The Witcher 3 was a massive success, both commercially and critically, anticipation for the franchise won’t dwindle anytime soon, especially in consideration of the promising TV Series developed by Netflix set for release sometime next year.
Picture it, Ciri, a character that resonated so strongly with players after her introduction in The Wild Hunt, back in the world of The Witcher with the political elements glossed over in the last two installments sharing the stage with paranormal elements. I think Ciri’s refusal of her lineage in favor of a life of the solitary life of a witcher would make for a compelling duality in a potential game, sort of like a Polish Aragorn. CD Projekt Red understands what The Witcher series means to the fans and have no intention of letting it go anytime soon.
