Wonder Woman 2 is getting a new release date that should allow it some breathing room before Star Wars hits in Dec. 2019. Previously announced for a Dec. 13, 2019 release date, Wonder Woman 2 has now been moved up six weeks and will arrive in theatres on Nov. 1, 2019.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set for Dec. 20, 2019, which is more than enough reason for Warner Bros to want to give Wonder Woman 2 some time to flex in the #1 spot, if it gets there (and with Patty Jenkins returning to direct, it should).
As of now, Wonder Woman 2 is all alone in that release date window, though Fox has Nov. 22, 2019 reserved for an untitled Marvel movie. MGM’s next James Bond film is the closest competition with a release date of Nov. 8, 2019.
Disney’s Thor: Ragnarok made megabucks in that same window currently reserved for Wonder Woman 2 , breaking records for Marvel with its $121 million domestic opening weekend. That box office take made Marvel the first studio to produce 3 $100 million-plus domestic openings in one calendar year, following Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
A recent report from Page Six suggests that Gal Gadot won’t play Wonder Woman unless Brett Ratner, a producer accused of sexual assault by multiple women, and his production company are off the movie. A Warner Bros. called the story “false,” while Gadot deflected questions from Vanity Fair and her rep did not respond to requests for comment.
Ratner’s RatPac Dune production company was a passive financier on Wonder Woman and Ratner isn’t listed as a producer on the film, while WB’s commitment to RatPac ends with Rampage on April 20.
As for Wonder Woman, it shattered multiple records including the top-grossing film of all time from a female filmmaker and solo director. Made for $150 million, it earned $412.6 million domestically and $821.8 million worldwide and sits at a tidy 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Wonder Woman 2 will also be shown in IMAX, according to Warner Bros.
Gadot reprises the role of Wonder Woman in Justice League , which releases in theatres on Nov. 17. Industry estimates project a domestic take of at least $100 million in another win for DC on screen.
