A new month means more free games for Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus subscribers. While Sony has yet to announce January’s free games lineup, Microsoft got it out of the way before Christmas.
As always, there are two free Xbox One titles and two free (and backwards compatible) Xbox 360 titles in January. The highlight of the month is “Celeste,” which originally came out earlier this year. The highly precise indie platformer garnered praise throughout 2018 and is likely to show up on several Game of the Year lists.
Fans of rally racing can also get “WRC 6” from Jan. 16 to Feb. 15. Players can drive solo or participate in online challenges featuring sharp turns on hazardous dirt road courses.
“Lara Croft: Guardian of Light,” originally released in 2010, will be available from Jan. 1 to Jan. 15. The small-scale, downloadable “Tomb Raider” spin-off was well-received when it first came out, being praised for its clever co-op puzzle solving.
Finally, “Far Cry 2” will be free from Jan. 16 to Jan. 31. The somewhat divisive game helped establish the open world formula that made “Far Cry” a behemoth in later years, and has accumulated a cult following since its release.
