Ark: Survival Evolved v254 released last week, and the update introduced four new tamable Dinos to the game. This guide will reveal everything you need to know to get the Purlovia, Baryonyx and more on your side.
1) Ovis Aries: The Ovis Aries are essentially Ark’s brand of sheep, and, as such, they’re not a very threatening tame. To get one under your control, simply craft a single Sweet Vegetable Cake and feed it to the animal. Put the item in your last slot, approach the Ovis and hit E on your keyboard. After that, you’ll be able to use the scissors to harvest its wool in place of pelt. If you’re playing on the Island, start looking in the Grand Hills to find one of these.
2) Basilosaurus: Ark’’s shallow-water whale is best tamed with Therizinosaurus Kibble. Craft it with an egg, Citronal, Angler Gel, three Mejoberries, fiber and water. You’ll probably find a Basilosaurus in the northwest shallows of the Island. With about a half dozen kibble in tow, carefully approach one with no attack and start feeding. You’ll have to wait about 25 minutes per feeding interval, so it might help to scatter some Prime Meat to keep lingering predators away.
Once it’s yours, the Basilosaurus is great for oil farming or stealing black pearls from squids like the Tusoteuthis. Its mobility and fast health recharge rate make it suitable for combat too.
3) Baryonyx: The Baryonyx is a more active tame, and that means it’s really helpful to have some kind of pen ready to hold it in place. Head to the southern shores of the Island, and you should be able to find a few of these by the water’s edge. Depending on what you have, it’s helpful to use a flight-worthy tame to pick it up and carry it to your pen. Once it’s knocked out, fill it with at least seven Pachyrhino Kibble depending on level. Use an egg, Citronal, cooked Prime Fish Meat, two Mejoberries, three fiber and water to craft.
In terms of uses, its tail spin attack is great for stunning other Dinos. It can also gather lots of Prime Fish if that’s something you’re looking for. In general, this is a good early tame for those who want a versatile Dino to ride. It’s got a balanced skill set despite not having a true specialty.
4) Purlovia: The Purlovia is a pretty similar active tame. It’s small, so you can use an average flight-worthy tame to transport it to a pen. If that's not an option, try to attack one of these from high ground with any kind of tranquilizer weapon. These Dinos like to hang out by Whitesky Peak and Red Peak on the Island.
Once you’re able to take one down, the Purlovia needs at least three Moschops kibble depending on level. That’s crafted with an egg, Citronal, cooked Prime Fish Meat, two Mejoberries, three fiber and water. It should only take five to 10 minutes to tame. Skilled players can tame packs of Purlovia to guard a base. Otherwise, they’re a solid way to collect raw meats.
Ark: Survival Evolved v254 is available now on PC and comes to Xbox One and PS4 next week. Be sure to read our Tek Tier guide and previous taming guides for more help.
