Oliver and Felicity’s romantic relationship was a huge story arc in Arrow Season 4. Felicity has been at the center of fan criticism for years now. Many weren't very happy when the two officially became Olicity--taking what some believed to be Black or White Canary’s due place as Ollie’s girl. If you are one of those people, this latest scoop from TV Line will surely brighten your day. Showrunner Wendy Mericle revealed fans shouldn’t expect an Olicity reunion anytime in the near future.
“They’re both in crisis mode. Oliver’s got two really big jobs, and [Felicity] is spinning out about Havenrock,” Mericle explains. “Until they’ve gotten some clarity for themselves, there’s not much room for the relationship side of things.”
The bad news? There’s no chance Black Canary or White Canary could be Oliver’s next love interest. Both for obvious reasons--Sara isn’t so much into guys, and Laurel, may she rest in peace.
Eliminating the romantic tension between Oliver and Felicity may be the best thing the show could do heading into its fifth season. It’s what the creative team needs to bring their ‘back to basics’ approach full circle. We need to see Oliver taking care of business on his own, like in Arrow Seasons 1 and 2. It’s a shame the reception of Felicty’s character took a negative turn halfway through Arrow’s four-season run. She used to be one of my favorites. The problem with Felicity now is she can’t keep up with the best thing about Arrow: the fight scenes and street-level heroics. When I picture Green Arrow, I think about his badass bae fighting by his side---like Sara and Laurel did.
With that being said, there’s no way I’m advocating for Laurel to come back to the series. In fact, I think her death was a great way to advance the plot for Season 5. The final scene where she confesses her love to Oliver provided closure for their long romantic history and I think now Oliver is more motivated than ever to do what he was born to: protect Star City.
There’s a lot to look forward to in Arrow Season 5. The premiere episode will start things off with a bang, according to Stephen Amell, who teased the most ‘violent one shot in the history of network television.”
“Suffice to say that episode 501 of Arrow has the opportunity for us to have the most vicious, violent one-shot in the history of network television. I insisted that its gonna be me, no stunt double, and he [Director James Bamford] said fine, but you have to do it shirtless.”
Amell also said Arrow’s going to be “fucking mean” this year. And he should be after the events of Season 4: Black Canary’s death, the dramatic breakup with Felicity, Damien Darhk kidnapping his son, not to mention his whole team left him in the finale episode. Now he’s the Mayor of Star City with no team.
Questioning herself after thousands died in the Havenrock missle attack she failed to prevent, we should also see a different side of Felicity moving forward. With no relationship drama to worry about, hopefully we’ll see both Green Arrow and Felicity at their best.
Arrow returns Oct. 5.
