21 Jump Street proved that the ironic-but-loving TV remake can birth a franchise. Out-succeeding previous efforts like Starsky & Hutch, The A-Team and The Dukes of Hazzard, the first Jump Street spawned a sequel, a gender-swapped spin-off and a possible Men in Black crossover. It also launched directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on a rendezvous trajectory with Star Wars — their Han Solo movie comes out in 2018.
Can Baywatch hit those same heights? Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon looks to be giving it a shot, backed by Zac Efron, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and, yes, Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff.
Like Jump Street, Baywatch will have an R rating, the reason for which will become immediately clear if you watch the new international trailer:
Swearing is wonderful. But this trailer makes swearing feel a little strained, like “fuck,” “bitch” and “motherfucker” are here to cover up where jokes should have been. Good swearing takes effort. We’ll see if the new Baywatch profanity is hilarious or boring when it hits theaters May 26.
