The first official trailer for Birthdays the Beginning , the latest project from Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada, has been released by acting publisher Arc System Works. And it looks like the beloved developer’s next project will be just as weird as a JRPG farming simulator probably seemed to publishers when Harvest Moon was first pitched back in the ’90s.
Based on this week’s footage, it seems like Birthdays the Beginning will be a much more hands-off experience than the Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons franchises. Players will still work the land, raising and lowering the surface as desired to create mountains, plains, rivers and valleys, all of which will gradually populate with wildlife that will adapt to survive in the provided environment. We’ll see dinosaurs, fish and primates, just to name a few, along with a variety of vegetation. And it’s probably safe to assume there are some plants and animals being prepared for the final build that didn’t make this week’s trailer.
It’s still not clear what goal players are working toward, but it’s possible Birthdays the Beginning is intended to be the kind of experience where the journey is just as important as the destination. We did get confirmation that Toybox Games plans to bring the game out West. There’s no word on a launch timeline yet; however, the studio has confirmed that NIS America will handle publishing duties for Birthdays the Beginning in Europe and North America.
For a closer look at Birthdays the Beginning, take a couple minutes to watch the new trailer published Wednesday. Then head down to the comments section and share your early impressions of the Yasuhiro Wada’s next project during the long wait for the Birthdays the Beginning release date.
Birthdays the Beginning is in development exclusively for PlayStation 4. The game makes its Japanese debut on Jan. 19, 2017; however, there’s no word on when Birthdays the Beginning will be available in Europe or North America.
