DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns celebrated the New Year by teasing fans with an upcoming DC TV announcement. In the tweet, Johns mentioned all the DC TV shows currently airing both on Fox and The CW and concluded with, “ and many more! One which will be announced soon…”
Johns could be speaking of a series already in development. In which case, Black Lightning is at the top of the list for a premiere date. The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl writer Greg Berlanti has been working with The Game and Being Mary Jane creators Salim and Mara Brock Akil on a Black Lightning TV show for more than a year now. Fox ordered a pilot back in September.
Though Black Lightning was one of the first major African-American superheroes in DC Comics, many young fans associate him with another character holding the same electromagnetic powers: Static, the focus of the hit Kids WB animated series, Static Shock. There have been rumors for years Warner Bros. had a Static show in development with Jaden Smith as the lead, however the series never came to fruition. If the Black Lightning series finally gets a premiere date, it would be a long time coming.
Some fans hope for a different series announcement, such as a Black Canary spinoff featuring Birds of Prey and starring Arrow ’s Katie Cassidy. However, since a film centering around that same arc was just announced, that’s less likely. There are of course fans still hoping for CW to pick up Constantine for Season 2, but I think it’s fair to say that train has left the station.
2017 brings the premiere of two new DC shows. One on NBC, Powerless, and another, Krypton, on SyFy. New seasons of Preacher and iZombie will also premiere. In the animated world, Young Justice Season 2 has also been ordered to series, though it’s unclear where the show will find a home. If Johns is speaking of a totally new project, it’s anyone's guess what DC has in mind.
