Call Of Duty 2017 has possibly been leaked ahead of its official reveal, and promotional artwork suggests it’s the World War II game everybody’s been waiting for. The project, titled Call Of Duty: World War II, is the assumed title in development for a fall release from Sledgehammer Games. Its codename, Call Of Duty: Stronghold, recently appeared in casting documents.
The art doesn’t tell us much about the game, but it certainly channels that faded, 1940s American aesthetic that’s been mostly absent from shooters for the better part of a decade. With glimpses of classic guns like the M1 Garand and historic events like D-Day, it looks like Sledgehammer is doing everything possible to represent a war that’s been iconically adapted throughout industry history.

As with most rumors, however, there are reasons to both validate and disprove the findings. On the affirmative side, small details like consistent font styles do a great service for establishing legitimacy. It’s also worth pointing out that reputable fan sites like CharlieINTEL have provided coverage of the details too. Such a trusted community resource has a reputation to uphold, and its writers don’t like to report leaks that haven’t been properly vetted.
Then there are the negatives. These images first surfaced on a small YouTube channel, called TheFamilyVideoGamers that only has about 200 subscribers. The content provider reportedly received the images in an anonymous email that tipped connections to “someone very close to the project over at Sledgehammer.” When the source has obvious motivation to draw traffic to his videos, it’s worth taking the provided information with a grain of salt. Similar stories often have inaccurate results.
Earlier this year, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg teased that 2017’s Call Of Duty would take the franchise back to its roots with boots-on-the-ground combat. In 2015, Hirshberg also said a World War II Call Of Duty was “certainly possible.” With that evidence in mind, it will be interesting to see if this leak is real and how it connects to the final product.
