It’s been revealed that one of the missions in Call of Duty: Vanguard is titled Stalingrad Summer. The mission is based on the initial invasion of Stalingrad but seen from the eyes of Soviet sniper Polina Petrova. While Polina may not be a real person, she’s actually inspired by actual female sharpshooters on the Eastern Front that helped the Allied Forces.
The Sniper
In the game, Polina was originally assigned as a nurse treating the injured. However, when Stalingrad was first invaded, she became a member of the Red Army’s 138th Rifle Division and one of the deadliest snipers.
Polina is played by Laura Bailey, who shared in a statement that what attracted her to the character was her being fearless. Bailey went on to say that because Polina had nothing to lose, she could fully focus on the mission before her.
The Mission
In the Stalingrad Summer mission, Polina has been buried under the rubble after an aerial attack. While she managed to survive, all her comrades are either dead or MIA. Eventually, she got to the surface and when she came to her senses, she realized that she needed to defeat the invaders to get back home and save her brother Misha.
As she makes her way to her apartment, she defeats a search crew and even saves some hostages along the way. Once she reached her apartment, she got her hands on Requiem, a three-line Sniper Rifle.

Sledgehammer Game Campaign Creative Director David Swenson shared that the mission allows players to experience what Stalingrad was before it was invaded. It allows players to see and feel what it means to be in the city during summertime. Swenson added that players could experience what the city was like near the end of the six-month battle.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is set to be released this November 5 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
