Call Of Duty: WWII has a brand new social space called Headquarters, and Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey recently detailed its concept to Eurogamer . Taking inspiration from Orgrimmar in World Of Warcraft, Headquarters is a place for players to share accomplishments and, more importantly, come together.

Headquarters is set three days after D-Day, and it’s a space where multiplayer combatants can receive guidance about how to proceed. Challenges are doled out by recruitment officers, challenge officers or divisions offers, and they all offer specific rewards for completion. Players essentially get their marching orders from these NPCs and then head to the battlefield to complete them.

In terms of what these challenges might entail, they offer a wide range of tasks. Some may be as drawn out as reaching a specific kill threshold under specific conditions, while others might be as simple as “play Zombies mode” or “compete in the 1v1 PvP pit.”

As we’ve mentioned in previous articles , Headquarters also offers lots to do from the aforementioned PvP pit, to a firing range, prestige ceremonies, seasonal gatherings and mail from the developers. The mail may contain a special reward, a thank you message or news about upcoming events. If you’re looking for a party to complete a team-based challenge, you can also send out a bulletin to all soldiers in the 48-player lobby. In some ways, what we’re getting here is a mix of the Tower from the original Destiny with the Guided Games support of Destiny 2.

Because World War II was a conflict so focused on brotherhood, however, the ultimate goal of Headquarters is to bring players together in a positive way that most past Call Of Duty titles have not. In this case, Sledgehammer seems keenly aware that the franchise isn’t known for having the most welcoming community, and it aims to leverage Headquarters to remove that blemish. It essentially makes everything about the game more communal, and that means more chances for players to display a better part of themselves. If a new fighter is in the area, he or she can learn tips by watching experts shoot or show support by watching a Division member prestige.

In that same vein, there’s also a designated social score feature that rewards players for doing something nice. This rank can be increased by complementing the emblems of others or by using positive historically-rooted emotes. If one of your enemies is amazing with a particular weapon, maybe telling them so will increase your social score.

With all of these different ties to the Headquarters system, it’s clear that using it will be a major part of the Call Of Duty WWII multiplayer experience. Perhaps Condrey himself describes it best.

“You walked into Orgrimmar and it was a bustling city of people with all these activities that made it a community, whether it was the guy who was just showing off his max rank, all purple mounts or people going to mail, or people gifting each other things? That sense of community was something we felt Call of Duty hadn't capitalised on yet. That's what our attempt with Headquarters is."

Call Of Duty: WWII comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 3. Headquarters will debut during the PS4 Private Beta on Aug. 25 . Click here for the full list of weapons , perks and Scorestreaks we’ve learned about so far.
