Call Of Duty: WWII is one of 2017’s biggest multi-platform releases, but, according to a quote from the U.K.’s Daily Star , the title won’t be coming to Nintendo Switch anytime soon. It appears third-party support for Nintendo’s new console still hangs in the balance.
When asked about the prospect of Call Of Duty: WWII coming to switch, the answer from an Activision rep at E3 was fairly simple.
“Call of Duty: WWII will not be coming to the Nintendo Switch”
This apparent confirmation comes weeks after rampant speculation that a port of the game may be in the works. Shortly after WWII’s reveal, fans noticed it was possible to link their Nintendo accounts to the official Call Of Duty website, which seemed odd considering no version for Nintendo platforms had been announced.
These findings were essentially boiled down to a clerical error, but speculation resumed when the Canadian development team at Beenox tweeted that it had received a visit from a Canadian army professional to ensure the company’s current project could be as realistic as possible. That statement was capped off with a Call Of Duty hashtag. In terms of Beenox’s history with Activision, the studio previously bought Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 to last-gen consoles like Xbox 360 and PS3. When porting a PS4 game to Switch, you’d imagine a similar kind of downscaling would have to take place. As such, fan assumptions ran wild with possibilities.
If the above quoted statement is to be believed, however, it would seem that Activision is pretty sure about leaving the Switch off Call Of Duty: WWII’s initial platform list. Even officials at Sledgehammer Games tried to dodge the subject on the eve of E3. “That’s a question for the ATVI business guys,” studio co-founder Michael Condrey told one inquisitive Twitter follower. Well, we have our answer from the business guys today, and it’s not an affirmative.
Call Of Duty last appeared on a Nintendo platform with 2013’s Wii U port of Call Of Duty: Ghosts. Given that Activision’s support for Switch currently only consists of Skylanders Imaginators, it may be a while before we see a more sustained push for the console if it happens at all.
After all, we still don’t know what Call Of Duty project Beenox is working on. It could potentially go one of three ways: the studio may be helping Activision port WWII to another platform like PC, it might hint at a Switch-exclusive game or maybe the Switch port process for 2018’s game has already begun.
For those who are able to play Call Of Duty: WWII, Sledgehammer recently confirmed female characters will be playable online and Nazi swastikas will be censored in multiplayer environments. Players can also look forward to a historically accurate version of the Uplink mode from Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
