Call Of Duty: WWII fans enjoyed the game’s PC open beta last weekend and the test revealed some pretty interesting things about the game. Following recent multiplayer and Zombies leaks, Sledgehammer Games Co-Founder Michael Condrey issued a statement to CharlieINTEL and formally revealed the London map in the name of transparency.
Here’s a snippet of Condrey’s thoughts on the unintended discovery of some hidden game files:
“With betas there’s always the risk that some people will try and spoil that experience for others. We have had a couple things leak recently across multiplayer and Zombies… Some of the details were inaccurate, early or still subject to change. Others we would consider spoilers. We never plan for leaks, but we also understand that it’s hard for fans not to read the news when it’s about something they are so excited to learn more about.”
In addition to shedding some light on the matter, Condrey also shared a few screenshots of a brand-new multiplayer map being played on a brand-new mode. For those who missed the leaks from last week, this is the London multiplayer map being played in a new match type called Gridiron. For all intents and purposes, it looks like a ground-based version of the Uplink mode Sledgehammer introduced in 2014’s Advanced Warfare. Take the ball to the opposing team's spawn point. The first team to score 20 points wins.
The map itself looks dark, dank and dreary, just like a map of 1940s London probably should. Its moist tunnels are full of rich ambient lighting that look like a joy to experience in real time. Condrey said London was “a studio favorite for Domination, Hardpoint, and Team Deathmatch” and could be a competitive eSports powerhouse in the months ahead.
We won’t go into detail with regard to the specifics of the leaks to avoid spoilers, but those who want the info can find it at the links in this paragraph. A bugged menu from the PC beta revealed what appeared to be WWII ’s full suite of multiplayer maps, additional features and the aforementioned Gridiron mode. With regard to Zombies, users found data strings tied to the mode’s perks, power-ups, weapons and a whole lot more. Essentially, everything outside of gameplay footage and map details can be gleaned from the leak.
Call Of Duty: WWII just finished active development, so, while incomplete, the files found in these leaks seem more likely to be correct than incorrect. While it’s unfortunate that Sledgehammer wasn’t able to control its message in the weeks before launch, the studio knew what it was up against when releasing an open PC beta.
Call Of Duty: WWII comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 3.
