Call Of Duty: WWII Nazi Zombies has quickly become one of the most intriguing facets of the game, and thanks to a recent Game Informer exclusive, we’ve learned a lot more about it. From story to gameplay and maps, here’s what we know.

The plot takes place towards the end of World War II, when the Nazi cause has fallen into its most dire times. Compelled by urgency, Doctor Peter Straub finds a way to essentially reanimate the energy of the nervous system via pathways in the spine. Using this technology, subhuman life can emerge from a single body or even parts of multiple bodies stitched together. The secret to maintaining life is pain, however, and that’s why players will be seeing all manners of bolts and wires sticking out from all the wrong places of their undead enemies.

Despite having a basic understanding of his discovery, Straub is ultimately unable to control it. Zombies have taken over the streets multiple times before, and the player encounters one of these incidents in the Bavarian village of Middleburg. A typically quaint scene during the holiday season quickly becomes drenched in horror. The chaos funnels our quartet of heroes into an abandoned salt mine, where they must board up windows and collect currency to progress.

In terms of gameplay, one of the newest aspects of Nazi Zombies is customizable loadouts within four basic classes: offense, control, support and medic. This new system allows players to tailor their character to an individual play style rather than being stuck in a singular role. That role might also fluctuate based on special abilities unlocked throughout the narrative. In contrast to the temporary Gobblegum of the past, the perks unlocked by completing various challenges in 2017’s game are permanent. One example mentioned in the article is a brief burst of unlimited ammo. It’s accessed by pressing L1 and R1 at the same time.

In addition to abilities, special weapons will be making a return as well. The opening minutes of Nazi Zombies offers the chance to unlock Tesla weaponry, but it’s only gained by killing various herds of zombies in a specific area. In other words, co-op teams will be rewarded for taking the time to search down alleyways and other dark corners of the map that may appear to be empty. As for Easter eggs, the hunt for those secrets was described as “one of the most intense and challenging mysteries yet.”

Echoing sentiments first heard during Nazi Zombies’ SDCC debut, there’s little doubt that the goal for this co-op mode is to provide the scariest and most historically grounded Zombies experience yet. In fact, its developers even went to slaughterhouses to analyze and dig for inspiration. Real-world Nazis were actually enthralled in energy experiments like these, and this iteration of Zombies borrows heavily from that established tradition to offer its own unique scares.

Call Of Duty: WWII comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 3.
